Living in
Elyria, Ohio

Lorain County's historic county seat, with real character, real value, and a community that has been proving itself for two centuries. Here is everything you need to know about Elyria.

01

Why Elyria?

Elyria, Ohio is the county seat of Lorain County, with a population of roughly 53,634 and a history that stretches back to 1817. It has the distinction of being the only county seat in Ohio located at the confluence of two branches of the same river — the East and West Branches of the Black River. But more than history, Elyria is a city with genuine character, a diverse housing stock, and a cost of living that makes homeownership accessible for families who want more space and more value than what the pricier lakefront suburbs can offer.

I am Gary Post. My partner Kelly and I lead The Pinnacle Post Team at RE/MAX Crossroads, and we have been helping families across Lorain County buy and sell homes for a combined 32 years and over 600 homes sold. We know Elyria well. We know which neighborhoods offer the best value, which streets have the most beautiful historic homes, how the schools are trending, and what the market is doing right now. This guide covers all of it.

Elyria Market Overview: Summer 2026

The Elyria housing market remains one of the most accessible in Lorain County. Buyers get more square footage and more character for their money here than just about anywhere else in the area, and sellers benefit from steady demand from both local buyers and people relocating from higher-priced markets.

Based on current market data, the typical home price in Elyria sits around $179,871 as of Mid-2026. That is well below the statewide Ohio median and a fraction of what you would pay in Avon, Westlake, or Rocky River. Price per square foot averages around $132, which means buyers get substantially more home for their money. Homes in good condition at the right price are selling in roughly 35-40 days, and the market remains active without the frantic pace you see in some neighboring communities.

The housing stock in Elyria is remarkably diverse. Near Ely Square and the historic district, you will find beautifully maintained Victorian, Queen Anne, and Craftsman homes with architectural details you simply cannot find in newer subdivisions. In the mid-century neighborhoods around the city's parks, there are solid ranches, colonials, and Cape Cods on well-established tree-lined streets. On the outskirts and along the growing corridors, newer construction offers modern floor plans and finishes. That variety means Elyria has something for virtually every buyer.

For sellers, Elyria benefits from steady demand driven by its affordability and location. Buyers priced out of Avon, Avon Lake, and Westlake increasingly look to Elyria for better value, and the city's central location with easy highway access makes it a practical choice for anyone working in Cleveland, Lorain, or the surrounding areas. Pricing it right and making sure the property presents well are the keys to a smooth sale.

The city's signature event is the Elyria Apple Festival, a beloved three-day tradition held each September in Ely Square downtown since 1980. Live music, food vendors, an apple baking contest, a princess pageant, a costume contest, a car show, cornhole, and children's activities draw thousands to the city every year. The Summer Concert Series and Third Thursdays downtown events round out a full calendar of community programming.
